Books for Fun in the Sun | Summer TBR

Hooray for summertime!! Unless of course you live in the southern hemisphere in which case my summer books will be winter summer books…

Anywho, I am very excited for summer this year. Our parents will be fully vaccinated and we should get our first jab at some stage over the next three months. Once we get it we can finally go on a little trip somewhere. I would love a scenic holiday in Ireland. Maybe a camping trip but I’m a city holiday girl at heart really so we’ll see.

While we’re waiting, I’ve picked out some summery reads for while I’m soaking up those blissful rays of vitamin D. I can see it now. Me in a flowy feminine summer dress. Cocktail in one hand. Kindle in the other. A muscular man in speedos cooling me with palm fronds… Himself probably won’t be too happy with that last bit but a girls got to have her palm frond fan man in the summer!

There are two genres I always gravitate towards during summer; romance and mystery. Nothing holds my attention like an enemies-to-lovers romance or an historical mystery but I’m not limiting myself to just those tropes. I just happened to pick mostly those tropes. I can easily spend several hours lounging outside reading when the weathers good and I have the time. Topping up my factor 50 every half an hour cause my ginger ass burns extremely easily.

I’ve picked out some backlist and frontlist books that fit the bill for my summer faves. The frontlist books are due for release in July.

Beach Read by Emily Henry

TWO WRITERS, ONE HOLIDAY. A ROMCOM WAITING TO HAPPEN…

January is a hopeless romantic who narrates her life like she’s the lead in a blockbuster movie.
Gus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy-tale.

But January and Gus have more in common than you’d think:

They’re both broke.
They’ve got crippling writer’s block.
And they need to write bestsellers before summer ends.

The result? A bet to swap genres and see who gets published first.
The risk? In telling each other’s stories, their worlds might be changed entirely…

Set over one sizzling summer, Beach Read is a witty love story that will make you laugh a lot, cry a little and fall head over heels. For fans of The Flat Share and If I Never Met You.

The catch? They have to go on a company cruise…together.

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne

Distraction (n): an extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.

Ruthie Midona has worked the front desk at the Providence Luxury Retirement Villa for six years, dedicating her entire adult life to caring for the Villa’s residents, maintaining the property (with an assist from DIY YouTube tutorials), and guarding the endangered tortoises that live in the Villa’s gardens. Somewhere along the way, she’s forgotten that she’s young and beautiful, and that there’s a world outside of work—until she meets the son of the property developer who just acquired the retirement center.

Teddy Prescott has spent the last few years partying, sleeping in late, tattooing himself when bored, and generally not taking life too seriously—something his father, who dreams of grooming Teddy into his successor, can’t understand. When Teddy needs a place to crash, his father seizes the chance to get him to grow up. He’ll let Teddy stay in one of the on-site cottages at the retirement home, but only if he works to earn his keep. Teddy agrees—he can change a few lightbulbs and clip some hedges, no sweat. But Ruthie has plans for Teddy too.

Her two wealthiest and most eccentric residents have just placed an ad (yet another!) seeking a new personal assistant to torment. The women are ninety-year-old, four-foot-tall menaces, and not one of their assistants has lasted a full week. Offering up Teddy seems like a surefire way to get rid of the tall, handsome, unnerving man who won’t stop getting under her skin.

Ruthie doesn’t count on the fact that in Teddy Prescott, the Biddies may have finally met their match. He’ll pick up Chanel gowns from the dry cleaner and cut Big Macs into bite-sized bits. He’ll do repairs around the property, make the residents laugh, and charm the entire villa. He might even remind Ruthie what it’s like to be young and fun again. But when she finds out Teddy’s father’s only fixing up the retirement home to sell it, putting everything she cares about in jeopardy, she’s left wondering if Teddy’s magic was all just a façade.

Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters’ most brilliant and best-loved creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her shocking men’s pants and no-nonsense attitude!

In this first adventure, our headstrong heroine decides to use her substantial inheritance to see the world. On her travels, she rescues a gentlewoman in distress – Evelyn Barton-Forbes – and the two become friends. The two companions continue to Egypt where they face mysteries, mummies and the redoubtable Radcliffe Emerson, an outspoken archaeologist, who doesn’t need women to help him solve mysteries — at least that’s what he thinks!

‘Think Miss Marple with early feminist gloss crossed with Indiana Jones… Dastardly deeds, whirlwind romances, curious mummies and all the fun and intrigue of Egyptian excavations, with a heroine who wields a sturdy parasol rather than a magnum. Accomplished entertainment.’ Guardian
