Jane Austen July is a month-long readathon all about reading Jane Austen and related works. The readathon is hosted by Books and Things and Blatantly Bookish.
The challenges are:
1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels
2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels
3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time
4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book
5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen
6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book
7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book
This year I decided to focus on Emma so I will be reading Emma, a retelling of it and watching some adaptations. If I have time I will also read Jane Austen’s letters and Belinda by Maria Edgeworth.
I also got an absolutely beautiful Jane Austen colouring book by Jacqui Oakley. The illustrations in it are simply stunning. I can’t wait to get colouring! I’m thinking I will do some watercolour painting which will be in my vlog of the readathon.
I’m a big fan of elegant (or as elegant as I can make it) tea parties which take place quite a bit in Austen’s novels. I’m thinking of trying out some Regency recipes and having myself a little afternoon tea during the readathon. I’m leaning towards pea soup at the moment…

As for the retelling of Emma, I’m not sure what I’ll read yet. I read an article on BookRiot that lists 5 possibilities but none of them really tempted me. There’s a list on Goodreads as well that I will probably have more luck with.

Persuasion by Jane Austen Valentine’s Keepsake Journal
My idea behind this was a collection of items a Georgian lady might be given by her lover/sweetheart. So I created this keepsake envelope collection that can be used as a reading journal and included Persuasion by Jane Austen because of the letter near the end of the book. Any book where the characters exchange … Continue reading Persuasion by Jane Austen Valentine’s Keepsake Journal

I tried out a new recipe, pizza in … Continue reading Jane Austen July Wrap Up

I love the colouring book! Have a fun July. I started Jane Austen July early and watched the BBC series of Emma. It was really good. I preferred it to the recent film.

I love that one too! I watched the recent movie today and its hard to know how I feel about it… It’s beautiful and quite funny at times but something seems a little off with it.

I liked it too until I saw the BBC series and then I preferred that. I guess you have more time to do a tv series. I preferred the Emma and Knightley actors in the series plus there was more Frank and Jane.

Oh, I love this idea! I’ve got two more Austens to read, and I was thinking about saving one of them for August, but I may just have to bump it up now. Now to choose between Mansfield Park and Persuasion, hmm.

I hope you enjoy whichever one you go with 🙂 I would probably pick Persuasion…
