Venus in Furs

427354Title: Venus in Furs
Author: Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch
Genre: Erotica
Series: n/a
Goodreads Rating: 3.65/5
Why I read this: Wanted a quick read
Synopsis:‘Venus in Furs’ describes the obsessions of Severin von Kusiemski, a European nobleman who desires to be enslaved to a woman. Severin finds his ideal of voluptuous cruelty in the merciless Wanda von Dunajew. This is a passionate and powerful portrayal of one man’s struggle to enlighten and instruct himself and others in the realm of desire. Published in 1870, the novel gained notoriety and a degree of immortality for its author when the word “masochism” – derived from his name – entered the vocabulary of psychiatry. This remains a classic literary statement on sexual submission and control.
What I thought about the book:
This was so much more than I expected it to be. It isn’t really sexy but it’s very interesting and beautifully written. It’s more a story of obsession and misguided desire. There is some whipping in it, though, don’t worry!
I’m not into S&M and honestly I don’t get it. There’s a lot of books out now featuring S&M after 50 Shades, making it hard to avoid (still haven’t read 50 Shades, though), but none explain the drive behind it as well as this. I could understand these people and knew love dictated their actions.
Favourite Quotes:
“A slap in the face is more effective than ten lectures. It makes you understand very quickly.”
“The moral of the tale is this: whoever allows himself to be whipped,
deserves to be whipped.”
My Rating:
